It's impossible to know who we are, or what our farm is all about, without first understanding our faith.
We love the Lord our God, with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. And we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-40)
Although food is important, Jesus said:
"It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)
Because of this, we would love to not only feed your family's stomachs, but also your spirits. If your family does not have a Bible, if you would like a free Bible or Childrens Bible, please contact us and we will get one to you for free!
If you have any questions at all about our faith, about God, or Christianity in general, don't hesitate to ask we will give you an answer.
We're the Thompson family and we are so grateful you stopped by! We are a Christian homeschooling family of five living for the Lord off the land. Our family's purpose is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We try and be as self-sufficient as possible and live a humble life serving, sharing, loving and feeding others. We started this farm as a way to spend more time in God's creation, to spend more time together as a family, to help feed our friends, our family and our neighbors in need.
If you're wondering who grows all the food and runs the farm, it's just us: Steven, Christina, Evelyn, Grant and Theodore.
We run a regenerative market garden style no-till farm. Everything is grown using organic and all natural practices. We don't use any chemicals, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. We believe in proper animal husbandry, and stewarding all our resources well. We grow a wide variety of garden vegetables, fruits and berries. We also keep bees for pollination & honey. For protein we keep laying hens for fresh eggs, broiler chickens for meat, as well as sheep and pigs. Our animals are pasture raised, grass fed, and are never fed any soy or GMO. Our animals are raised right, and live well-loved lives. We primarily sell directly to our local customers through our online farm stand where customers can order our products. Once the produce is selected and paid for, we then go harvest it all from the fields, wash it, pack it and it is either picked up or delivered depending on the customers location and the options they choose at the checkout. We do offer wholesale pricing options to schools, hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants and other organizations who buy in larger volumes.
There have been questions about whether or not we run a CSA program where customers can pre buy a CSA Share at the beginning of the season and then receive a weekly or bi-weekly box of vegetables throughout the growing season. After asking many individuals their preference, the overwhelming response was how people preferred to choose exactly what they would receive each week opposed to the traditional style of just receiving whatever the farm puts in the box. This means people sometimes get vegetables they don't enjoy eating, and that's no fun. So we are opting for a type of CSA where our customers can still help support our farm and also receive a discount benefit by pre buying all of their veggies at the beginning of the season. This will be done in the form of purchasing a certain amount of store credit at a discounted rate. This store credit can then be used throughout that growing season to purchase whatever we have available. This gives the customer the most amount of flexibility and choice, while also giving them the benefit of receiving veggies at a 20% off rate. This is done by giving 20% more value in store credit then they purchase it at the beginning of the season. We are going to test this method with a few individuals the first year and offer it more widely the following seasons. We are also in the process of getting approved to accept SNAP / EBT payments to help serve those individuals who are shopping for produce using those benefits.
Another major part of our farming operation is fighting food insecurity by providing much needed nutritious food to at-risk food insecure families, and those affected by homelessness in our town. We accomplish this through our "Torrington Grown for Torrington's Own" program that partners with The Community Kitchen of Torrington, Friendly Hands Food Bank, FISH: NWCT Food Pantry, and.... you! Our valued customers who care! Read more about this program on our "Torrington" page.
We are Produce Safety Alliance Certified through the PSA Grower Training Course, and are Licensed Fruit and Vegetable Growers through the State of CT Department of Agriculture. We hold a Maple Syrup and Honey Producer Certification from the state, and our apiary of honey bee hives are registered with the state entomologist. In addition, we are certified by the Farmer Veteran Coalition under their "Homegrown by Heroes" program for all the products we sell. We've also earned a Vegetable Farming Certificate through the UConn Ag Extension Vegetable Production Course.
Our focus will forever be on Jesus Christ, and until we are with Him for the rest of eternity, we have a mission to tell others about what He has done for them. (Matthew 28:19-20) This is not to "shove our religion down your throat", but we believe this is the most loving thing we could possibly do. We want to see you in Heaven one day and there is only one way there. Jesus said:
"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)
Everyone must Repent, and Believe on Jesus Christ for their eternal salvation. Place your faith and trust in Jesus who died to make payment for your sins. Accept His free gift!
We are current members of the Farmers Veteran Coalition: Connecticut Chapter, the American Solar Grazing Association, and the New Connecticut Farmer Alliance
Starting a farm has not been an easy task, however there are several organizations that have helped us immensely that we would like to show our gratitude for. In no particular order these are:
The CT Department of Agriculture, The Connecticut Resource Conservation & Development Area and their "Farm UP" Individualized Farmer Assistance for Military Veterans program, Heroes to Hives, The UCONN Extension, The UCONN College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, UCONN's Solid Ground Program, The CT Farm to School "Put Local on Your Tray" Program. These programs and resources have been instrumental in our success and we are very appreciative of all that you do!
We only grow our favorite (the best tasting!) varieties of what we love to eat! Different vegetables have different growing dates to maturity so what's ready will depend on what part of the season it is. We implement a succession planting program so there is always some kind of fresh produce available week to week.
